FAQ
Frequently asked questions
Everything we get asked about applying to Inception Studio — eligibility, the four-day retreat, cost, acceptance, and what makes it different from YC and other accelerators.
Logistics
Where does the retreat take place?
In-person at a private venue in the United States. Recent cohorts have run in Napa Valley, California. NEEDS-REVIEW: confirm current/upcoming venue with Inception.
When are upcoming cohorts?
Multiple retreats per year on a rolling schedule. See the Cohorts page for the current calendar.
How long is the retreat?
Four days, in person, single intensive. There are no remote sessions and no follow-on weekly meetings.
What is a typical retreat day like?
A blend of advisor sessions, pitch coaching, peer feedback, and structured time to refine the deck and narrative you will use to fundraise. Day 4 culminates in Demo Day with investors present.
Should I apply
Do I qualify?
Inception is for proven, successful founders. If you have founded and operated a company before — ideally one with meaningful traction, revenue, or exit — and you are now building in AI, you likely qualify. First-time founders are not the target.
What does "proven founder" actually mean?
Someone who has previously started a company that shipped product, generated revenue, or had an exit. Inception is post-traction, not pre-idea. Mentors and the curriculum assume you already know how to build, sell, and operate.
I am an international founder — can I apply?
Yes. The retreat is in the US, so you need to be able to travel for the four days. There are no other geographic restrictions.
I am building a distributed or remote team — does that matter?
No. Where your team is based does not affect application review. The retreat itself is in person, but your company can be set up however suits you.
Can I apply if I am still validating an idea?
Probably not the right fit yet. Inception is post-traction. If you do not yet have a product in market or paying users, programs like Y Combinator or earlier-stage incubators are a better match.
Eligibility and process
What is the application process?
Submit the online application with information about you, your company, and what you would refine during the retreat. Strong applications are followed up with a call. NEEDS-REVIEW: confirm exact application flow with Inception.
How long does the application take to fill out?
Most founders take 30 to 60 minutes. Thoughtful answers matter more than length.
What is the acceptance rate?
Under 3%. Six to eight companies are accepted per cohort, typically ten to fifteen founders.
How much does it cost?
Nothing. Inception Studio is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit. Zero equity, zero fees, ever. The program is funded by sponsors and donors.
When will I hear back?
Application review timelines depend on cohort cadence. NEEDS-REVIEW: confirm typical response timeline with Inception.
Post-acceptance
What happens after I am accepted?
You receive logistics for the retreat (venue, dates, travel guidance), an introduction to your cohort, and pre-work — usually a current version of your pitch and a short brief on what you want to refine. See the What to Expect page for the day-by-day breakdown.
Can I bring my co-founder?
Yes, co-founders attend together when both are on the founding team. Inception accepts founding teams, not just individuals.
What should I bring to the retreat?
A current pitch deck, a working demo or product you can show, a list of the open questions you want help with, and an open mind. A short packing list goes out post-acceptance.
What is Demo Day?
The final day of the retreat. Founders pitch a refined version of their deck to an invited audience of investors and operators. See the Demo Day page for upcoming and past events.
Other
Is Inception a 501(c)(3)?
Yes. Inception Studio is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit educational organization. Donations are tax-deductible to the extent allowed by US law.
Do you take equity?
No. Zero equity, ever. This is structural — Inception is a nonprofit by design, not by stage.
Who funds Inception?
Program sponsors and individual donors. The Sponsors page lists current supporters.
Where can I see past cohorts and alumni?
The Cohorts page lists every retreat. The Founders and Companies directories cover everyone who has been through Inception.
